Holomua Rd Fire 9/23/25
The Holomua fire started at 1:29pm on Tuesday, Sept 23, 2025, and was not 100% contained until 7pm on Friday, Sept 26, 2025. Fire investigators said the fire was intentionally set with two locations of origin 300 feet apart along the upper portion of Holomua Rd. The fire actually crossed Baldwin Ave. The fire grew from four acres and burned 380 acres of MahiPono land in two days, prompting evacuations in Upper Paia for several hours. The Paia School students were taken by bus to Baldwin Beach. The school had to remain closed for weeks to clean up the smoke & soot damage. Maui Electric turned off power to Paia town as soon as the fire was detected. Hawaiian Tel service was down until Oct 1st for 39 people in Kuau, Kuau Bayview, and Makawao. This fire made Paia residents realize how vulnerable to wildfire is everywhere downwind of the Holomua Rd homeless encampment. The MFD heroes have had to attend to way too many fires on Holomua Rd.
